School Memories

Sixth grade students began middle school by thinking about their current status as learners, setting goals for the year and reflecting on their past school experiences. Ms. C-R shared her own recollection of the oft-repeated first day scenario when the teacher would get to her name on the attendance list and proceed to mumble and fumble trying to pronounce it correctly. Growing up with a given name (Elana) that was difficult to pronounce and a nickname (Lani) that was impossible to spell correctly caused her to approach each year with a strange mixture of excitement and trepidation. You can scroll down to the end to view her comic.

Using as inspiration Ms. C-R's story and excerpts from various sources, including several graphic novels, students reflected on an experience from their educational past. They first shared their stories orally, then composed a written paragraph describing the event. Finally, they imagined that they were the writers of their own graphic memoirs and using the comic strip making program provided by Pixton.com, students created a "page" from their imagined memoir.
